Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Environmental Sciences is working on significant projects aimed at making use of algae as a source of food and alternative energy, and improving the quality of water. Leading such research is Associate Professor Berat Zeki Haznedaroğlu, a young scientist who has returned to Turkey within the framework of TUBİTAK’s “Returning Researchers Program” and is continuing his research at Boğaziçi University.

Prof. Üstün Ergüder Writes About the Stormy Waters of Higher Education and Boğaziçi University

 “I am not young enough to know everything.”  These words of Oscar Wilde’s, displayed on Ergüder’s office wall, greet his visitors.

Inspired by the idea of being able to play ‘makam’ music on the guitar, B.U. alum Dr. Tolgahan Çoğulu designed an “adjustable microtonal guitar.” A former guitar player in the group Kardeş Türküler, Çoğulu is currently the Assistant Director of Istanbul Technical University’s Turkish Music State Conservatory Musical Performance Department. We talked with him about his musical journey and the microtonal guitar he developed.

Boğaziçi University’s Kilyos Sarıtepe Campus Sports Complex opened its doors to sports lovers on April 5 with a colorful event. Among the players of the Alumni team were Dr. Cevdet Akçay, Chief Economist of Yapı Kredi Bank, Kemal Dinçer and Serdar Koçyiğit, former professional basketball players, and Mustafa Gülser, Human Resources Director at SONY Turkey.
The Tsunami Observation and Monitoring Center Building, part of the National Earthquake Monitoring Institute (UDIM) of the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, became the second building at Boğaziçi University to receive the Leed “Gold” Certificate.
In recognition of his contributions to mathematics, the Mathematics Foundation of Turkey gave the 2014 Körezlioğlu Research Award to Associate Professor Atilla Yılmaz of Boğaziçi University’s Department of Mathematics.
Did you know that frisbee, the game we often see played on campus on sunny days, is a professional sport? Boğaziçi University’s Frisbee team, the Fat Cats, was formed in 2007 and has become a model for frisbee teams at other universities since then. The Fats Cats have won two championships in tournaments organized by the Turkish University Sports Federation and a “Spirit of the Game” award.
