Boğaziçi University’s Byzantine Studies and Research Center became operational on November 24, 2015.  The Center aims to become one of the leading academic centers in the field of Byzantine history and research in Turkey and across the world.  Studies to be conducted at the Center on Byzantine history, culture, arts and archeology will also shed light on the history and culture of Medieval Istanbul, Anatolia and the Balkans as well as the Ottomans.

İdil Türkmenoğlu, one of the leading names in the field of Human Resources in Turkey, is currently vice president responsible for Human Resources, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability at Boyner Group. Türkmenoğlu graduated from the Management Department of Boğaziçi University in 1995. Throughout her career, she has held top human resources management positions at prestigious companies and has introduced concepts to the business world such as positive management in Human Resources and democracy in the workplace.

Boğaziçi University is a key player in scientific research in the field of particle physics in Turkey. Among the research teams from Turkey at the European Nuclear Research Center (CERN), the group working under the umbrella of Boğaziçi includes two prominent scientists from Boğaziçi University, Professor Erhan Gülmez and Associate Professor Erkcan Özcan. We spoke with Prof. Gülmez and Prof. Özcan about their work in the experiments that started in the 1990s, and the contribution of Boğaziçi University to those experiments.

“A Magical Day at Boğaziçi University” (BÜ’yülü bir gün), perhaps the most colorful of alumni activities, brought together Boğaziçi alumni in their classrooms on the South Campus on October 24, 2015. 

 

Organic Electronics has been attracting increasing interest in recent years. The Microfluidic Integrated Electronic Circuit project, developed by Associate Professor Şenol Mutlu of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and his team at Boğaziçi University, will be applicable in the area of biological and chemical sensors compatible with lab-on-chips. The device, produced by Mutlu and his team within the framework of the Microfluidic Integrated Electronic Circuit project, uses water as its transistor material.

Six prominent research universities in Turkey joined forces to enhance the effectiveness of Turkish researchers in European Union projects.  The establishment of the Alliance of Turkish Research Universities was made public at the “Turkish Universities in the European Research Area” conference held in Ankara on October 8-9, 2015.  Boğaziçi University is one of the six members of the Alliance.

Refugees and their plight have recently become a major issue in Turkey and many countries around the world.  Şenay Çınar from Boğaziçi Magazine, the monthly publication of BU’s Alumni Association (BUMED), talked with three Boğaziçi University members who are currently active in Refugee Rights Turkey: Oktay Durukan, Öykü Tümer and Nur Özkut.  The interview, which appeared in the October 2015 issue of the magazine, addressed important issues such as the services that the organization provides for refugees, the legal situation in Turkey vis-â-vis refugees, and also the benefits a Boğ

BU signed a memorandum of understanding with Invention Development Management Company (IDMC) and Intellectual Property Solutions of Intellectual Ventures (IV), a $6 billion patent fund, towards a strategic agreement to cooperate on patenting and research regarding technology projects conceptualized at the university. 

Present at the signing ceremony were President Gülay Barbarosoğlu and Edward Jung, co-founder of several Microsoft teams and the founder and Chief Technology Officer of the $6 billion technology fund, Intellectual Ventures.

We talked to Göktuğ Kıral, a Boğaziçi University student and “Turkey’s youngest Ironman” about how he earned this title and the journey he took afterwards.

The ACT (Accelerating the Commercialization of Technology) Fund was established to market and support new technologies developed in Turkey. The projects that will be supported by ACT will be determined by an assembly of 34 universities under the leadership of Boğaziçi University.  ACT will invest €100,000 to €2.5 million in 20 to 25 technology initiatives during the period 2015-2018.
