The Undergraduate Awards (UA) has announced the winners of the 2016 program, including the Highly Commended Entrants from Boğaziçi University. Cited as the ultimate champion of high-potential undergraduates, and often referred to as a “junior Nobel Prize”, The Undergraduate Awards is the world’s largest international academic awards program, recognizing excellent research and original work across the sciences, humanities, business and creative arts.
Boğaziçi University ranked first among Turkish universities in some important categories in the 2016 QS World University Rankings. 916 universities around the world were evaluated this year, including 11 universities from Turkey. Boğaziçi University retained its position in the top 500 universities in the world, and ranked first among Turkish universities in citations per faculty member. Boğaziçi University also ranked first as the Turkish university most preferred by international students.

The July 2016 issue of the journal Climate Research published a joint study by Prof. Murat Türkeş, member of Board of Directors of Boğaziçi University’s Center for Climate Change and Policy Studies and Prof. Ecmel Arat of Ege University, Department of Geography, Physical Geography Division. The study is titled “Dates of Frost Onset, Frost End and the Frost-Free Season in Turkey: Trends, Variability and Links to the North Atlantic and Arctic Oscillations Indices, 1950-2013”.

Boğaziçi University’s Neurodegeneration Research Laboratory (NDAL) is representing Turkey in Project MinE, which has brought together teams from 16 countries aiming to discover the causes of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a disease related to loss of motor neuron cells, and to develop effective treatments.  Project MinE is the first, biggest, and most comprehensive research study on ALS conducted internationally, after the Human Genome Project initiated in the 1990s to identify and map human DNA.

The collaboration between Boğaziçi University and Harvard Business Publishing (HBS), a leading name in academic publishing in the fields of management and economics, offers academics and students online access to a rich library comprising case analyses, articles, reading material, special files and online education programs.  

Muhammed Topal, a second year student in the Department of Economics, is one of the four Turkish students to participate in the Economic Forum of Young Leaders 2016, also referred to as “Davos of the Young”.  The forum, a major organization that brings together young leaders from Europe, will meet for the 11th time this year.  It aims to host around 350 participants and serve as an effective platform for discussion to have the youth heard.  

Boğaziçi University has been selected by the best students of Turkey again this year.  The number of students ranking in the top 1000 registering to Boğaziçi University increased this year as well. 49% of the students admitted to Boğaziçi University for the 2016-2017 academic year were placed in the department of their first choice.

Prof. Haluk Özener, Director of Boğaziçi University’s Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, stated that earthquakes were common for Turkey, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for them.  Özener said, “We expect a major earthquake in the Marmara region, and we know that it is getting closer.  Unfortunately, we do not know exactly when it will hit.”  

The book titled “Multiphase Catalytic Reactors: Theory, Design, Manufacturing and Applications” prepared for publication by Prof. Zeynep İlsen Önsan and Prof. Ahmet Kerim Avcı of Boğaziçi University’s Chemistry Department is a work of reference in its field. The book was published by John Wiley & Sons, a leader in academic publishing.

Prof. Can A. Yücesoy of Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering has been working on a project aimed at developing a new approach to understanding the causes of muscular diseases and optimizing currently used treatments, using mathematical modeling and various experimental techniques. The project is supported by TUBITAK.
