The living memory bank of BU, 89-year-old John Freely’s energy is as young as he was when he first arrived in Istanbul 55 years ago.  Prof. Freely, who started teaching at Robert College in 1960, has been a close witness of the years leading to the establishment of Boğaziçi University.  Freely is a genuine Istanbul lover and a humanitarian who can easily strike up friendships with people from all social backgrounds.

With its academic infrastructure, its close ties with its past and its traditions, and its unique location, Boğaziçi University has a special place and prestige in Turkey and abroad. In its March 2015 issue, BUMED Magazine focused on the University’s status in the world. Aylin Buran, Editorial Director of the magazine, interviewed Vice Provost Professor Taner Bilgiç, whose responsibilities include overseeing BU’s Office of International Relations. We are presenting the interview for Manzara’s readers.
The MANAQA Project, of which Boğaziçi University’s Technology Transfer Office is partner, is nearing its end. The MANAQA Project aims to examine interaction among cells in diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s and study the molecules in them. The project is led by Assistant Professor Hamdi Torun, who has been listed among the “most innovative people under 35.” His Nano-hand technology is planned to develop medication at the molecular level to treat and cure cells that are causing disease.
Aromar Revi, member of the Leadership Council of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) and Director of the Indian Institute for Human Settlement, visited Boğaziçi University on February 16th for a meeting on “Sustainable Development Goals”. Boğaziçi University has been instrumental in the launch of the Turkish Sustainable Development Solutions Network. In a speech he made at the meeting, Mr. Ravi pointed to the changing equilibrium resulting from globalization and the dangers that the world will face in the future.
Dr. Alp Bassa and Dr. Olcay Coşkun became the recipients of the IKEDA Research Award, which aims to recognize and publicize the work of outstanding scientists in the field of mathematics and to encourage young researchers.
Boğaziçi University’s BOUNtoGREEN team was the winner of the inter-campus environment contest “Students Go Green” organized for the first time in Turkey by yesilist.com. In just three months, BOUNtoGREEN team members collected 1,650 kg of e-waste to be recycled.
An “Integration System” developed at Boğaziçi University for simultaneous integration in the fields of software and hardware is the first project to receive a patent in this area in Turkey. The project, prepared by Associate Professors Arda Yurdakul, Alper Şen and Doğan Fennibay, aims to integrate virtual and real systems in various sectors, ranging from telecommunications to the automotive industry, by using “Embedded Systems”.
Boğaziçi University and the Foreign Policy Association hosted a conference on “Globalization and Higher Education” to discuss the new opportunities and threats faced by higher education as a result of globalization.
The George Washington University hosted the first colloquium of the Global Humanities Project—bringing together the presidents of three universities, alongside humanities advocates from several countries, to discuss ways to enhance the visibility, prestige and impact of the arts and humanities in an increasingly globalized world. The colloquium signaled the start of Boğaziçi University’s collaboration with The George Washington University and Al Akhawayn University to produce a series of interconnected events drawing on the humanities in different national and cultural contexts.
The Turkish Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Namık Tan, hosted a reception for the Boğaziçi University community in honor of the schools 150th Anniversary. Held at the Embassy’s beautiful Washington, D.C. residence, the reception drew a large crowd, with BU alumni and friends from all over the United States joining. Following Ambassador Tan’s welcoming remarks, Boğaziçi University President Gülay Barbarosoğlu took the podium, sharing a film about the institution’s history and giving thanks to all present for joining the celebration.
