The “Boğaziçi from Generation to Generation” seminars were held within the framework of the 2016 Boğaziçi University Open House Program held between July 19-27. The seminars brought together Boğaziçi graduates who have successful careers with student candidates. In the first seminar held on July 22, the graduates shared their professional experiences with the student candidates and talked about what it means to be a member of the Boğaziçi community.  Among the participants were Serdar Sunay, Mehmet Erktin, Gönenç Tarakçıoğlu and Başar Başaran.

The first stage in the process of the election and appointment of the Boğaziçi University President to serve during the 2016-2020 term was completed with the elections held at the South Campus’ Albert Long Hall on Tuesday, July 12. Out of 444 tenured and tenure-track full time academics employed at the university that are eligible to vote, 403 participated in the vote, making this the highest participation rate in the University’s history. 399 of the 403 votes cast were valid, with 4 blank votes.  The votes received by the candidates were as follows:

Segmentify, developed at the HayalEt Incubation Center operated by the Technology Transfer Office of Boğaziçi University, received an investment of 200,000 Euros from ACT funds and 100,000 Euros from StartersHub to support its opening to global markets.

In line with the objective of using indigenous resources in the production of energy and minimizing its dependence on imports, Boğaziçi University is participating in a project aiming to develop the technology to produce natural gas from coal (SNG).  Within the context of the project backed by the Ministry of Development, the University will develop catalysts for a technology which is economically feasible, environmentally clean, and has low emission rates.

Boğaziçi University’s 149th Commencement Ceremony was held on 22 June 2016 at the Uçaksavar Sports Complex.  The guest speaker at the ceremony was Ayşe Cihan Sultanoğlu, Assistant Secretary General of United Nations and Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (RBEC) of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), selected as one of the most influential Turkish women in the United States.

Prof. Ignacio Chapela, the founder of the Laboratory of Microbial Ecology at the University of California at Berkeley, was at Boğaziçi University as the guest of the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Center for Educational Policy Studies in June.  Prof. Chapela made a speech at the conference held on June 16, stating that it was already proven that GMOs caused antibiotic resistance and posed a major risk to public health.

KOSGEB (Small & Medium Enterprises Development Organization) has provided $3,750,000 to the International Incubation Center to be established in New York under the leadership of BU’s Finance Technopark, in partnership with Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul Trade University, and Fırat University.
